Coaches are invaluable in the development of an athlete's skills. They are teachers and mentors for the thousands of young athletes they interact with in their day-to-day work. They work not only with athletes but also the athlete's parents in setting realistic goals and the training required to reach their potential and their goals. All Skate Canada coaches are required to be trained and/or certified in the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) see also Coaching Certification.- Pre-Juvenile Sectional Events as of July 1, 2011 - all coaches attending Pre-Juvenile events at a Sectional event must be Intermediate STARSkate/Provincial Coach (ISPC) Certified. This means for the 2011-2012 season coaches must be ISPC (old level 2) certified to attend with their Pre-Juvenile athlete.
- Junior Nationals as of July 1, 2012 - all coaches attending this event will be required to be NCCP Level 3 certified. This means that coaches of Novice and Junior level competitors will have to meet this standard prior to Junior Nationals in January 2013.
- Canadian Synchronized Skating Championships as of July 1, 2013 - all coaches attending this event must be NCCP Level 3 certified. This means that coaches of Novice, Intermediate, Junior, Senior and Open teams must be NCCP Level 3 certified prior to the Synchronized Skating Championships in 2014.
When coaches log into BackCheck they will receive instructions on how to proceed with the ID verification. This process will eliminate the need to have the form notarized. Coaches who do not have access to a credit card must use the manual process for BackCheck which will require the form to be notarized. Coaches can contact the Member Services Department Skate Canada to receive a copy of this form.
Skate Canada, the Advisory Coaching Council and its subcommittees believe it is important to have highly knowledgeable and competent professional coaches that continue to learn and develop their skills to ensure a high quality learning environment for Skate Canada members. As such, Skate Canada wishes to recognize coaches who participate in professional development activities through the Continuous Education Program (CEP). Visit Skate Canada "Members only" for credit value for eligible activities and form.
Coaches are rated Gold, Silver or Bronze based on the credits they have accumulated during a two year cycle. Current cycle: September 1, 2010 to August 31, 2012
Status: Gold - 50 credits | Silver - 35 credits | Bronze - 20 credits (NCCP Level 4 certified or higher are automatically granted "Bronze" status)

- Club Programming, Administration, Planning
- Canada Winter Games or Prov. Winter Games Team Coach
- Acting as a Mentor Coach
- Conducting Parent Information Sessions at a Skate Canada Member Club
- Conducting a Program Assistant Training for CanSkate
- Club Consultants
Membership cards will be printed and mailed to coaches at the time of registration. Lost cards can be replaced at a cost of $50 per card. Should coaches wish to receive a reprint of their card to update any of their qualifications, a minimal charge will apply. The Best of the Best CanSkate Coach Program Toolkit that is available on Members only has been renamed the CanSkate Program Handbook. There have been no other changes made to this document at the current time. Coaches can access this document in Member's Only under Coaching > CanSkate Program Handbook. This handbook is a great resource for coaches looking to create an amazing CanSkate experience for their skaters!
